Frottage: Max Ernst

Frottage to me sounds more like a french cheese than the french meaning for the word of 'rubbing'.  The word is used to describe a method of placing paper over a textured object, such as wood or a textured fruit, for example, like a pinapple and then rubbing a pencil or crayon across the surface to create the illusion of the object on to the paper.  The technique was developed by Max Ernst in 1925 in a period of time known for the Surrealists.

An actual documentry can be seen on U-Tube using this link:

A very interesting technique to use.
